Holistic Medicine Comparison

Holistic Medicine As Compared With Other Medical Practices

Article by Robert Thatcher

Holistic medicine is health care that comprises all the aspects of one’ s personality to obtain the optimum state of wellness. It encompasses the process of looking into the wholeness of the person including nutritional, physical, environmental, spiritual, lifestyle and social values. Holistic medicine includes virtually all treatments and diagnosis known to achieve balance in personality. It upholds the responsibility of educating one’s self to attain the ideal over-all health and well being.

Holistic medicine and Alternative Medicine

Alternative medicine is commonly associated with holistic medicine. By definition, alternative medicine is the medical techniques that are usually not accepted or practiced by conventional medical practitioners. Most alternative medicines are founded to have rooted on unscientific, untested and untraditional principles. Often, these forms of medicine are closely associated with metaphysical components and anti-scientific stands.

Many of these techniques don’t normally have pharmaceutical values like the acupuncture, herbalism, Reiki, homeopathy and the likes. Yet the alternative medicine may also be used in experimental non-drug and drug techniques that are not yet accepted in the medical circles. The future of alternative medicine holds on the potentiality of transforming the “alternative medicine” into conventional medicine since it is now becoming widely appreciated and practiced by medical doctors. In fact, complementary medicine is the term used for alternative medicine practiced in combination with conventional medicine.

Due to these changes in view of the alternative medicine, holistic medicine has become a more preferable option among those who are quite doubtful of the alternative medicine.

Alternative medicine may appeal to metaphysical beliefs and so does the holistic medicine but on milder and more scientifically based approach. Yet the knowledge applied in holistic medicine still cannot hide the fact that it tends to cling to non-scientific knowledge.

Simply put holistic medicine claims to cure and treat the whole person. Holistic medicine stresses out the unification of the mind and the physical body. Holistic medicine practitioners give credence to the belief the man is not a pure physical body with systems and parts that encompass it. Man is also a spiritual being that requires spiritual healing. Holistic medicine concerns itself to the belief of the connection between the spirit and emotions and mind.

The gap between holistic medicine and alternative medicine is closed by the common practice of not using drug treatments and surgeries. They usually employ meditation, herbs, prayers, vitamins and minerals, as well as exotic diets in treating certain ailments. Holistic Medicine and Conventional Medicine

Allopathy or conventional medicine defines individual health as the non-occurrence of diseases, which appeals to be a negative approach in defining the condition. Holistic medicine on the other hand concerns itself on a person’s absolute state of physical, social, mental and spiritual well-being.

As based on the definition given (that is commonly used among medical practitioners), orthodox medicine remains to deal with one’s susceptibility to diseases instead of the wellness as opposed by holistic medicine. Based on common observations, conventional medicine typically doesn’t apply to healthy individuals. While holistic medicine focuses on the quality of living practiced by people. Sick people normally don’t seek medical attention not until the symptoms of the disease/s are obvious. Thus, there is too little preventive treatment against sickness.

There are great differences between holistic medicine and the conventional type both in the diagnosis and treatments. Most of which are scientifically based. In oppose to this stand, diagnosis in holistic treatment are conceived through the manifestations of body imbalance. These are determined through certain procedures distinctive only to holistic medicine and other related medicinal practices.

People who have already undergone any of these procedures claim that is not bad trying on or all of these practices. Yet individual preferences still have the hand on what will be accepted as the ideal procedure.

Questions And Answers On Natural Headache Remedies For Pregnant Women

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Wayne asks…

What can a pregnant woman take for headaches?

Tylenol is on my “safe list” of drugs OK to take during pregnancy, but I still just dont like to take pills since I am pregnant you know? What are some natural remedies? I thought I might be dehydrated but upon drinking lots of water I just pee alot more! Any other suggestions?

admin answers:

The headaches are normal, there awful, and i found nothing to help with them while i was pregnant. But tylonal is very safe. And if you can believe it so is vicodin and darvacet. So tylonal is on the lower end of the pain meds you can take. I was a little iffy about pills during my pregnancy but compared to vicodin tylonal is nothing so i felt pretty safe taking it every now and again

Marie asks…

signs of early pregnancy!!! taken from the net! a good list!!?

I am overdue for my period and experiencing cramping, headaches, pimples, fatigue, gas, going to the toilet more often and many other symptoms, Yet i am unsure whether i am just due for my period or could i be pregnant.. I am only at the 4-5 wk mark so have no real clue as yet! I came across the list below on the net! Thought this might answer a few Q’s in regards to the symptoms and the ppe who ask could they actually be pregnant or not this month!

You may start noticing pregnancy symptoms and/or be able to detect pregnancy after implantation, which occurs from around 7-10 days post ovulation. If you have conceived, the embryo starts to produce hCG after implantation and not before, so it is not possible to detect pregnancy or have pregnancy symptoms before this time. So the longer you wait to test after ovulation, the more accurate the result will be and the darker the potential positive test line may be. Pregnancy testing should ideally be done from the day your period would have been due.

What Pregnancy Symptoms Might I Experience?
Below is a list of pregnancy symptoms which you may find signal pregnancy for your own body. Remember, every woman and every pregnancy is different, so there’s no need to panic if you don’t have all of the listed pregnancy symptoms. I had absolutely no noticable symptoms (apart from not having a period) with my second pregnancy until 11 weeks.

High BBT (Basal Body Temperature)
If you regularly chart your cycle and take your temperatures, you will notice that your BBT will remain high throughout your luteal phase. Progesterone causes your BBT to rise upon ovulation and stay elevated should you be pregnant. If you are not pregnant, your BBT will drop right down and you’ll get your period as normal.

Missed / No Period
One of the first pregnancy symptoms you may notice is that your period does not arrive. While this symptom is one we most commonly associate with pregnancy, there may be other reasons why a period hasn’t arrived, for example high levels of stress, major illness or surgery. On the other hand, it’s possible to continue to have your periods during pregnancy. Some women may bleed for just a few months or even their whole pregnancy. (See our topic on Bleeding in Pregnancy for more information).

Morning Sickness
Another well known pregnancy symptom is morning sickness. Don’t let it’s name fool you – morning sickness can pay you a visit any time of day, so make sure you eat enough and avoid letting your blood sugar levels drop. Ginger is a great natural remedy for nausea so it’s worth a try, although some women find that nothing seems to help their morning sickness, which normally hangs around for the first trimester before getting better or if you are unlucky, the second trimester or even whole pregnancy. (See our topic on Common Pregnancy Ailments for more information).

Breast Changes
From very early on in pregnancy a symptom you may notice is changes in your breasts, including:

•Nipples may be tender and sensitive – some women describe their nipples to be irritatingly sensitive!
•Breast may be sore and / or lumpy
•Nipples may deepen in colour
•Veins may become more noticeable and enlarged in the breast area
•Areolas may darken (circles around your nipples)
•The little ‘bumps’ on your areolas (Montgomery’s Tubercles) may increase and / or enlargen
Increased Cervical Mucus
A surge in progesterone often results in a surge of creamy cervical mucus production. Some women may notice a little, and some notice much more.

Fatigue
When you first become pregnant, your metabolism steps up a few gears in order to support your developing baby as well as your own body, which creates one big workload! You may become so immensely tired that you feel that you need to sleep more than usual. Not only that, but the hormone progesterone which is required in high levels during pregnancy has a sedating effect. No wonder you feel so very tired! If you need to rest or sleep, don’t fight your body – it needs it!

Frequent Urination
As soon as a week after conception, you may notice yourself dashing off to the toilet more often, only to find that you’re urinating small amounts! This happens because the embryo starts to secrete the pregnancy hormone hCG, which signals for the blood supply to increase in the pelvic area. This results in the bladder becoming irritable and it passes even small amounts of urine. You may find you will wake in the night to urinate more often than usual.

Cramping
This symptom of early pregnancy can also be an unnerving one for parents-to-be, as often there is a fear of miscarriage. However even when not pregnant, your uterus is continually contracting. When pregnant, the foetus grows and pushes against the walls of your uterus, which causes it to contract – this is very normal.

If the cramping is accompanied by bleeding, see your doctor who can assess the situation to see if you may be having a miscarriage. However do n
i took a home pregnancy test a couple days ago but did it in the arvo.. showed neg… i think i will go to the drs this week if i keep feeling like i am
I guess my Main symptoms atm, are i
- have cramping, tonight its been constantly ever since i got home from work..
- i am going to the toilet to urinate More often!
- i am getting pimples
- more tired
- hot flushes
- cranky
- gone off smell of coffee and often feel ill after drinking it
think this is about it! still thinking could it all be in my head or is my period around the corner.. am doubtful as the test i did here turned out neg!

admin answers:

With my first pregnancy, somehow I “knew” I was pregnant. I felt fuller in my pelvic region (it was not like my stomach was full or anything), but I had only a handful of other symptoms. Going to the bathroom often is one, but it is a bit misleading – its sometimes not such a huge ‘urge’ to go like they describe in books. My basal temperature was higher, but you have to use a Basal thermometer to see it (and you need to have taken your temperature daily before getting pregs too so you can compare).
With my second, I had major fatigue right away, but no ‘feeling’ or anything. I found out I was pregnant a few days after being extremely tired (like falling asleep during dinner tired!).
Take a test – you are past your period due date, so you should get a very accurate reading.

Questions And Answers On Migraine Natural Remedies Prevention

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Charlie asks…

natural remedy for period migraine?

i’d get terrible headache either 1-2 day before or on the day of the period. so I think it’s period migraine. ibuprofen hadn’t helped. sometimes it is ponding, sometimes not. it lasts about 1-1.5 days. I know less salt before periods help, but i don’t always remember “oh, i’ll have my period tomorrow so lay off the salt”. So what are some natural remedy that helps (1) prevention and (2) after onset? I’ve heard vitamin B helps, less salt, no caffeine. I don’t drink coffee or soda, not on pill either. anything else?

admin answers:

I had a friend who had the same problem-it actually ran in her family. Her sister told her to start taking iron before her period. It helped her.

Caroline asks…

medication combinations topamax, adderall and oxy ?

I get severe migraines and have been on many things. The common remedies have never worked. For prevention I take topamax 100 mg 2x a day and I also take 30 mg of adderall in the morning. I am also prescribe oxy C for the migraines that are not prevented. The oxy is useless doesn’t help my pain it gives me crazy energy and keeps me up all night. I thought it’s purpose was the opposite. Also my face tingles or feels numb at times. I feel light headed or very dizzy like i’m going to pass out. It all helps me not have these head aches everyday but I have to believe something natural would help. What I’m taking now has to have a long term effect later. So which medication is making me feel so wierd?

admin answers:

Actually its more likely your adderall is the reason you up all night. It’s a powerful stimulent.

Questions And Answers On Natural Treatment For Arthritis

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Lynn asks…

What are some alternative treatments for arthritis?

My grandmother has arthritis in her hands and she takes medication, but it only helps to a certain extent.

I was wondering if there were any supplements or natural treatments that may help her?

admin answers:

It is actually quite effective when some foods are eliminated from the diet. The following foods can cause allergic reactions as well as painful arthritis: animal protein, tomatoes, white potatoes, peppers, bell peppers, cayenne, chili, paprika, pimiento and eggplant. Some people feel better when gluten is eliminated from their diet as well as giving up all dairy products.

Alana asks…

has anyone had a dog on remadyl or deramaxx?

i have a 171/2 year old dog.i had him on a natural arthritis treatment, about 4 weeks ago he got really bad, back legs stiff, rear paws turned under, dragging when he walks. i carry him up and down stairs to use bathroom. he is very alert and has a excellant appetite.his symptoms got really bad within a matter of 2 weeks, the vet put him on remadyl he has been on it for 3 weeks at first he did really weel but this past week he didnt do so good the vet said i could try deramaxx at this point i dont know what to do.

admin answers:

Try the 2nd med. Rimadyl works for some, not for other; works for a while and then it is not enough.

There is a new pan med out if the Dema..(never could spell that!) doesn’t do it.

It is called Previcox.

The biggest gun in the non-narcotic pain meds is Banamine. Usually used in large animals, it is an excellent choice for these very old dogs in intractable pain. Kept a shephard/husky mix I knew going until he was 20 and without it, he couldn’t get to his feet from the age 15/16 .

You are not going to “naturally” cure advancing arthritis. At his age, make him as comfortable as possible. Go to the drugs.

Questions And Answers On Natural Treatment For Depression Kids

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Charlie asks…

Natural (homeopathic?) treatments for feeling sad, tired, hopeless?

I am purposely avoiding using the word “depression” because I don’t think being diagnosed and “put on meds” is the answer for me.

About six months ago one of my dearest cousins died in a paragliding accident. I had to stop seeing my therapist, because she felt I should be in couples therapy with my husband, and she knew he would not want to pay for both. He always complained about the cost of my therapist, and about the chore of submitting her invoices to our health ins. for reimbursement. We only went to couples therapy once b/cos he complained about the trouble & cost of getting a babysitter so that we could go, as well as the time he felt he could be spending “getting things done”.

Now another dear cousin has died unexpectedly and I’m not dealing well. I feel lonely even when I’m with people, and lately I’m avoiding social events because I feel like sleeping. I hug my kids a lot and keep smiling at work, I’m working out when I can, but I need to get out of this funk…

Mike asks…

Teen Depression? Antidepressants?

I honestly feel like I have clinical depression. I have almost all of the symptoms including sadness, hopelessness, irritability, frequent crying (especially at night), withdrawal from family and friends (especially friends and classmates), loss of interest in normal activities, over-sleeping, over-eating, feeling worthless, lack of enthusiasm and motivation, lack of energy, constantly feeling tired/”out of it”, difficulty concentrating, and even thoughts about death/suicide.

I just feel down ALL the time and I have no friends, literally. I do exercise and eat pretty healthy, but there doesn’t seem to be enough endorphins produced by exercise.

I have told my sister who is very close to me, and I plan on telling my doctor/parents in a few months… But I don’t exactly know how. Do I just be straight-forward with them and tell them or what? Just say “(insert person’s name here), I think I have depression.” ? Please help me, I don’t know what to say.

How do I tell my doctor? (PEDIATRICIAN) I’ve done some research as well, and I would like my doctor to prescribe me some antidepressants. (Ritalin, Wellbutrin) Basically some antidepressants that would make me have more energy, less unhappy all the time. I am aware there are side effects to medications like this (My body and mind are still developing and it could potentially harm my growing, etc.) however I still think that antidepressants are the way to go.

I don’t think therapy will be as effective or beneficial as medication. I’m convinced that the depression I have was induced by a chemical imbalance in my brain. There hasn’t been anything else I can remember that would cause this.

*How do I convince my doctor to prescribe me antidepressants? I know he will probably do what he thinks is the best treatment option for me but I still think antidepressants will be the most effective.

I am a teenager, 14 years old. I will most likely be 15 by the time I see the pediatrician.
I know of kids who were 12 or 13 when they got prescribed antidepressants, so I know that I am old enough to be eligible for them.

By the way, I have tried natural remedies like exercise, green tea, etc, but none of them seem to make me feel better at all.

Thanks for your time.

admin answers:

Either just say it, or write them a thorough letter about what you’ve been feeling and how you need to start seeing a doctor. Those are pretty much your only options. As for your doctor, same thing: Just say you have depression. He’ll start asking you questions. Answer them truthfully, and when it’s your turn to ask questions, ask about the medications you researched.

Questions And Answers On Home Remedies For Acne Toothpaste

Kylee asks…

Home Remedies For Acne & Acne Scars?!? (Besides Toothpaste)?

I’ve been having some pretty bad acne problems lately and i’ve tried everything!! I’ve tried toothpaste and it didn’t help. Could you please tell me some fast and easy ways to get rid of my acne and acne scars..? And.. If it’s like a facial mask thing or something that’s kinda complicated, could you list the directions. Thanks!!
I’ve also tried acne facial washes, clearasil, and some other over the counter things that are similar to those that I mentioned. Those didn’t help me either.. I’m really desperate, I’m willing to try anything!

admin answers:

Good day.
I’ve continually had crappy skin, ever since I could hold in mind. In reality, I don’t actually ever recollect feeling thrilled with my complexion. I’ve been working on skin illnesses ever since I was just 10 years old, so it’s no real surprise that I have a very stressful occasion sympathizing from acquaintances who’ve just one pimple, whilst I had a skin stuffed with full-blow cystic acne. No one wants to feel as though they’re the ugly duckling of their friends, unfortunately I’m sure I was – I never had dates or dances, whereas my buddies seemed to be landing boyfriends constantly. It really made me personally feel left out, and that I knew it had been attributable to my skin and awful pimples.

And so, recommended by my elderly sis, who had also endured severe acne in high school, I sought the net program but yet I was cautious – I had attempted many solutions and products, I wasn’t certain I’d have any real outcome. It wasn’t until one morning hours when I awoke and was basically amazed at the quality and consistency of my skin – it absolutely was smooth, much less reddish, along with only one or two small blemishes on my cheeks. It had only been 2 weeks, and I couldn’t have been more happy – until the end of the 4 weeks when my skin was thoroughly clear. It is surely incredible, considering the acne scar tissue has also flawlessly faded.

I’m certain this product will assist you too. Assuming you need further information, simply do a yahoo or google search for the phrase ‘powerful remedies’, browse for the very first web site, and just click the menu ‘Acne’. Sorry since I am not able to provide the direct link to avoid being branded as spammer by yahoo.

Questions And Answers On Psoriasis Natural Treatment

Posted by admin Comments (0)

Marie asks…

Natural psoriasis treatment? ?

im looking for natural psoriasis treatment ways, for example some kind of food eating, special herbs teas drinking or something similar. what are the ways treating it from under the hair?

admin answers:

Hi, you can try one of the natural treatments for psoriasis from the Internet – some of them do actually work. For my psor. I use herbal cream by Champori quite successfully. It takes just a couple of weeks to clear the spots and they stay clear for months on end.
Try it: champori is available without prescription and comes with money back guarantee so if it doesn’t work for you – it’s free.

Chris asks…

do you know of a natural treatment for psoriasis? while it cannot be cured, symptoms can be relieved?

admin answers:

I’ll give you a few suggestions you can try.

I am going to try this one since I just heard about it. Soak your elbows in vinegar or apple cider vinegar for a few minutes and then wrap it with a pad soaked in warmed olive oil. I’d suggest doing this in the evenings before bed so it can really soak in. This would make a great nighttime soak.

Also, you can go for lotions that really create a barrier and keep your skin from being exposed to dry conditions etc like Vaseline Intensive Care lotion twice a day. That one really gave me some relief and helped keep my plaques under control.

Sunlight or UV rays is touch and go for people but make sure you use sunscreen on the areas of the body that isn’t covered in plaques while in the sun or rays since our skin is different than the average skin types out there. You definitely don’t want to cure psoriasis to end up with skin cancer!

I have heard of people having success with rubbing vitamin e oil *just take vitamin e capsules, break them, and rub the oil on the plaques* and then bandaging it.

The main thing is to keep the areas moist or protected from drying out. If you do keep the skin moist just be really careful to watch for infection since we get it easier than other people. Let the skin dry but not dry out between applications of different products! I hope that gives you a few things to try so you don’t feel at your wits end with it. The main thing you need to know is not one thing is going to work for everyone so try a few different ideas to find what works for YOU and good luck!
